Usually, a normal authentication system consists of a simple email / username and a (strong) password. Since not every user wants to register and remember new credentials again, companies like Google and co. started to build an adaption, to use the Google account to sign in to other services. The only thing you have to remember then is your Google acccount credentials.

Now what does Google has to do with these provider? A provider in this context is Google itself. By default you will start with the simple email/password provider.

(Status 2019: Currently you are only able to use the email/password provider. Other providers will launch in the future.).
